SCOUTMASTER CORNER

“A Scout is helpful. A Scout cares about other people. He willingly volunteers to help others without expecting payment or reward.” ~The Boy Scout Handbook, 12th Edition.

We all have a natural tendency to be selfcentered and self-focused. It is easy to look out for your own wants and needs; most of us have been doing it all our lives. Scouting asks boys to look beyond their own needs and instead focus on the needs of others. Go out of your way to be helpful to others. Look for opportunities to do a good turn DAILY!

Scouts are challenged to put others before themselves sometimes to their own detriment. Giving your time and talents to others takes an effort and it means you have to sacrifice something of your own. Doing a daily good turn takes a real effort. Some days an opportunity presents itself, but other days you will find you have to keep your eyes and ears open for an opportunity to help others.

The Scout oath outlines a duty to God & Country, a duty to others, and a duty to yourself. The order listed is not random. Your duty to God & Country is your most sacred and important duty. Your duty to others comes second, and a duty to yourself is after the other commitments have been fulfilled.

Being helpful in your Troop also means being respectful and doing what you can to help your elected Scout leaders. The Senior patrol leader, patrol leaders, and other leaders in the Troop have a difficult job to lead the other boys and to accomplish their desired goals. They need your help and support. Look for ways to help out the Senior Patrol Leader and to support his decisions.

Willingly volunteer your time to help others. Do this because you are a Boy Scout, and you represent the highest ideals of society. Do this without expecting payment or reward. Look for ways to perform a good turn daily, and consider others more important than yourself
